Als Mitte der 80er Jahre Bands wie The Wedding Present, The Jesus and Mary Chain oder My Bloody Valentine auftauchten, gehörten auch die in Coventry gegründeten The Primitives zur neuen britischen Indieszene. Die Band verband Punk, Wave und 60s-Pop und erspielte sich schnell die Aufmerksamkeit von - heute würde man sagen - Influencern. John Peel spielte die Primitives regelmäßig in seinen Programmen ("any combo with a singer called Tracy is alright with me"), nahm drei Peel Sessions mit ihnen auf. Morrissey sah die Band als Support von James und war so begeistert, dass er danach häufig mit einem Bandshirt zu sehen war.
International bekannt wurde die Band um Tracy Tracy 1988 mit ihrer (sechsten) Single Crash. Das dazugehörende Album Lovely und der Nachfolger Pure (1989) sind Indiepop-Klassiker. Nachdem die dritte Platte Galore an die früheren Erfolge nicht herankam, lösten sich die Primitives 1992 auf. Zu Ehren ihres 2009 gestorbenen Bassisten spielte die Band ein als einmalig geplantes Konzert in Coventry, worauf eine Tour 2010 und neue Musik in den nächsten Jahren folgten.

Founded in Coventry in 1985 The Primitives were amongst bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine or The Wedding Present to form a new indie scene in Britain. The Primitives were influenced by punk, wave and 60's pop and soon became popular amongst 80's influencers like John Peel ('any combo with a singer called Tracy is alright with me') or Morrissey. John Peel played them often in his shows and recorded three Primitives-Peel-Sessions. Morrissey attended a James concert with support by The Primitives and became a fan (wearing a band shirt from time to time).
Their sixth single Crash was a number 5 hit in England and got airplay all over Europe (even covered by German casting band No Angels). The three albums Lovely, Pure and Galore are indie pop classics. After releasing Galore the band split up in 1992.
After the death of bass player Steve Dullaghan The Primitives played a concert to honour him in Coventry in 2009. A UK tour in 2010 and new music (at FortunaPop! and Elefant Records) followed.
